Barebackis a rough stock event. Where a cowboy tries to stay on a horse with no saddle no rein just a riggin. Which is like a handle you strap around the horse girth. The cowboy is score point on how hard the horse bucks and how well he spurs and keeps control of the ride. The horse and score 1-50 points and the cowboy can score 1-50 points added together for a total score of 100 points possible.
Breakaway Roping is a timed event. Girls compete in this event from jr. rodeos up through college and amateur rodeos but not pro. In this event the goal is for a girl to rope a calf clean around the neck in the fastest time possible. The end of the rope is tied to the saddle horn. When the calf hits the end of the rope it breaks the string. That’s when the time is stopped.
Steer Wrestling is another timed event. Because of how dangerous and physical this event is most kids do not start this event until their in High school. In this event there is two riders start in the box. One riders job is to keep the steer straight so the other guy can run his horse past the steer as fast as possible. when he gets next to the steer he jumps from his horse to the steers head catching it by the horse. He then shoves his feet in the ground and stop the steer and throw it on its side. When all four of the steers legs are facing the same way the time stops.
Saddle Bronc is probably the most iconic event is rodeo. It is a rough stock event where a cowboy puts a special saddle on a horse typically a draft cross horse because their bigger and more powerful. This event is very similar to bareback besides the rider uses a saddle and bronc rein. They are still scored the same way.
Tie Down Roping is the event Breakaway was made after. The cowboy ropes the calf in the same way but when the rope comes tight it is tied to the saddle horn so it will not get loose. The cowboy then steps off his horse runs down the rope and flanks the calf and ties three of the four feet together. While the horse is keeping the rope tight for the cowboy. The calf then has to stay tied for six seconds.
Goat Tying is another event made for girls to compete in from jr. rodeo through college. It is also formed from Tie Down. A girl starts on her horse on one end of the arena and runs it down the middle of the arena toward a goat toed to a stake. She then steps off her horse flanks and ties the goat as fast as possible. It also has to stay tied for six seconds.
Team Roping is and timed event where two people male or female compete together. One partner ropes the steers head. Then turns it left so the other partner can rope its feet. Two feet means a clean time its +5 seconds if you only catch one. Then they must get both ropes tight and turn the horse and face each other then the time stops.
Barrel Racing is a girls event. this is the only event girls can compete in at the professional level.
Pretty simple the girl and her horse start at the end of the arena. Run into arena as fast as possible runs around three barrels in a clover leaf pattern then back to the end. Fastest time wins.
